Power BI Blog: Field Parameters and Numeric Ranges

24 July 2025

Welcome back to this week’s edition of the Power BI blog series.  This week, we consider numeric range parameters and field parameters in Power BI.

Numeric range parameters and field parameters are a great way to provide flexibility to your report users.  When working with a Power BI Project (PBIP) in Power BI Desktop with a semantic model that contains Direct Lake tables, you are remotely connected to that semantic model.  This scenario is often called remote modelling.  Field parameters were not supported in this scenario until this update: as soon as you connect to that semantic model, you will be able to create field parameters:

Additionally, Power BI has recently enhanced the accessibility to field parameters generated by user interface (UI).  A button has been added in the Model view within Power BI Desktop:

You will also find a button when editing a semantic model in the Power BI Service:

Together, these changes make numeric range and field parameters more powerful – and apparently, more is coming soon.  Watch this space…

In the meantime, please remember we offer training in Power BI which you can find out more about here.  If you wish to catch up on past articles, you can find all of our past Power BI blogs here.
