Final Friday Fix: March 2021 Challenge
26 March 2021
On the final Friday of each month, we are going to set an Excel / Power BI challenge for you to puzzle over so that you can get your “Excel fix”. Challenge your office colleagues to see who can solve the puzzle quickest. There are no prizes at this stage: you are playing for bragging rights only!
For this month’s challenge, let’s take a look at creating lines in the Matrix visualisation in Power BI.
In Power BI, there is a visualisation called the Matrix visualisation (no Keanu Reeves though). We can use it to display numerical values over several time periods:
Each line item is a measure. The challenge here is to make the Gross Profit measure stand out more by inserting lines into the Matrix visualisation like so:
No, we did not simply draw a line on top and below the Gross Profit measure. We can expand the visualisation by breaking the Total COGS measure down to Direct Labour and Direct Materials, by adding these in and the lines move automatically:
How did we do it? Have a go using the starter file here. This can be achieved easily in Power BI, with no lines drawn whatsoever.
Sound easy? Then why not have a go? We’ll publish one solution in Monday’s blog. Have a great weekend in the meantime!
