Challenges: Final Friday Fix: July 2019 Challenge

26 July 2019

On the final Friday of each month, we’re going to set an Excel / Power BI challenge for you to puzzle over so that you can get your “Excel / Power BI fix”. Challenge your office colleagues to see who can solve the puzzle quickest. There’s no prizes at this stage, you’re playing for bragging rights only!

This month’s Final Friday Fix will involve the data analysis software Power BI.

Dynamic Highlighting of Highest and Lowest Points in Data

In Power BI we can create visualisations. These visulisations can be interacted with, by means of using slicers, filters, and by clicking on other related visulisations’ data.

This month our problem is: how do we create a visualisation that dynamically highlights the best and worst periods of our data. To make it more interesting, note that highest and lowest periods will also have to change based on our date slicer:

To make this even more complicated, we would also want to be able to toggle the number of points to be considered for the best and worst periods of our data:

How do we do this? You can do this either in Power BI or Excel.

Sound easy? Have a go. We’ll publish what we think is the best solution done in Power BI in Monday’s blog. Have a great weekend!
